Welcome to my blog!

The purpose of this blog is to share with you my upcoming internship in Mumbai (Bombay), India and the journey in preparation for it. It has so far been an interesting experience and I have not even started my trip yet.

Why the name? I will be in Mumbai during June and July, the beginning of the Monsoon season. Learning to wade through flooded streets and work with this natural phenonema is to me very similar to the learning experience I have had so far and am sure to face in India. Most of India's water supply falls during the Monsoon season. It is kind of a feast or famine on water. I found this analegous to India itself, a nation of extremes and it will be my challenge to learn to work with and within it. From what I have understood of India, this amazing nation will both pull on me like the raging flood waters and at the same time fascinate me like the tranquility of a steady stream.

I have the priviledge to travel with another student who has now also become a friend. She is as talented as she is kind and fun. Together we will set out to work with an inspirational company that is dedicated to empower women in deplorable situations, often in the slums of Bombay, to better their lives. The company works with small textiles producers and our task is to develop a plan to standardize the production process so they can deliver a more uniform end result.

Before I continue with this blog I want to take a moment and thank my family, friends and college. They have been very instrumental in making this trip possible and encouraging me as I am learning to have the two most important things in this journey: patience and endurance.

I hope my blog will entice you to consider traveling to India and help you with your preparations.

Let's start swimming!!

Never a dull moment

Well, again a change in plans. We were ready to head out to visit with a producer when we last minute found out that we would not be going to Utan today (still don’t know why).

We decided to then use the day to try to visit the Ministry of Textiles. They were supposed to have some information on government programs that might be useful for the producers we have visited. Since this is a government office, you cannot just go, but need an appointment for. So, after Pooja (our go-to-girl when you need something done) called us and said we could go, we headed out .

After the usual hour on a packed train, we got off and took a cab. I don’t even know how to describe the cab ride that followed, but after a lot of stop, turn around, ask, and “interesting” neighborhoods, we finally stopped in a neighborhood that was partly construction site (not the nice US-kind), partly slum (and not the posh slums we had worked in) and were told us we were there.

The Municipal Building was an old, run down building and we were very nervous about getting out, but headed in and found the person we were supposed to meet with. After half an hour of talking, he asked what we were there for. Sigh. We explained our purpose one more time, just to find out that we needed to go to the same office, but in Delhi. Then he told us that company we are interning with had to do that and that he had been in touch with them many times already!

After a lot of chit chat and more clarifications, we finally left and walked through a neighborhood I really did not feel good about. We finally reached the main road, caught a cab and he took us 500 yards straight to the train station!!! The cab driver earlier took nearly an hour!!

I was so glad to be back tonight and tomorrow: I am going to Utan if I have to swim!!
